How long before OpenAI, Microsoft, and other big techs start hiding microphones in public spaces to collect more AI training data? They are going batshit crazy these days.

@nixCraft What makes you think they aren't going to just reuse the ones they hid years ago to collect tracking data for sale and targeting?

@nixCraft What, you mean they haven't already been placing microphones in public spaces for the past 10 years?

@nixCraft always-on smartphone data ingestion, including bodycam

they start complaining that the data isn't enough to make their models smart - they'll just want more data - to have access to services (for which there'll be few alternatives, like making doctor's appointments or similar) you'll have to opt into the collection scheme

@nixCraft My first laptop had a switch with which you could turn off the builtin microphone. Long lost technology.

@nixCraft did you just forget they everyones phones have constantly recording mics sending audio back to servers? A data request to google shows you hundreds of voice recordings at times you never used the voice features. Hell this was before the big AI wave.
